Mathematics inspired fantasy prize (February 2009)

Since the creation of Quadrature, a special place has always been reserved for fantasy, with texts that tend towards a literary easy-going style, and that are sometimes even funny!
To celebrate its 20th birthday the journal has invited its readers to contribute to this tradition, and has officially launched a mathematics inspired fantasy prize.

The rules are simple: everyone can participate and write a text of between one and four pages, in the form you wish (short story, poem, play, letter, crossword, calligraphy, specification sheet, birth certificate…), in French, and using ideas from or alluding to the mathematics world which is so dear to us.

The best texts will be published and the authors will receive some superb mathematics publications. EDP Sciences has offered to give to the selected authors one of the following works:

  • The fantastic Nombres et algèbre by Jean-Yves Mérindol: a 700-page hefty tome of learning where everyone will find something to learn and understand
  • Three tomes of corrected exercises: Problèmes d'analyse by W.J. Kaczor et M.T. Nowak (tome 1, tome 2 and tome 3) (ideal if you are both an award-winner of competitions and participating in other less literary competions)
  • Jacques Hadamard, un mathématicien universel by Vladimir Maz'ya et Tatiana Shaposhnikova: a passionate biography to rediscover a too little known mathematician!
The prize winners will be announced in the number 74 issue (October-December) of Quadrature as well as on the journal website.

The closing date is 30th June 2009
